So what effect will LTE (Long Term Evolution) have on smartphone app design? Stockholm is going to get its LTE-4G network in 2010 and as I understand this will be one of the first in the world, I think Verizon are a little ahead of them. So what can be done a minimum of 100 Mbps in a pure IP based environment? Well most anything one thinks. Of course, this is not going to be available for smartphone form factors straight off the bat, antenna constraints determine that, to get this speed is going to need 4 separate antennas in the device, and today’s state-of-art does not allow for 4 antennas to get squeezed into an iPhone! But, what a day when they do, and maybe it is time to start looking at antenna manufacturer’s stock prices.
Something I do like about LTE is that it is one standard actually converging together competing 3G standards, which at least is a good intention.
